Need advice! Thinking of going to Xian
Hello all!
I was inspired by one of the posts that said Beijing is doable on one's own, so my friends and I are going there May 5, and going to try to see the sights! One of my friends speaks the dialect, so I think we'll do all right!
We wanted to see to go to Xian to see the Terracotta warriors, and were wondering the following:
1. Is a day trip to Xian possible, and recommended? As in, fly in in the morning, fly out at night? We really only want to see the Warriors.
2. We were planning to book the flight when we got in our hotel in Beijing. How much approx is a domestic flight round trip Beijing-Xian-Beijing?
3. Any recommendations where to eat in Xian? Or what and where to shop?
4. What is the best way to go around Xian? Arrange for a car to meet us in airport and take us straight to Warriors, or catch a cab (we're 7 people). How far is it from the airport to the Warriors, in terms of time?
thanks very much for any advice!

1. Yes, a daytrip is possible but Xian is fairly interesting for an overnight.
2. You can get an upper limit on the airfare using www.wacts.com.
3. There are some excellent dumpling places in Xian.
4. The airport is about an hour away from the warriors. If someone speaks Chinese you can probably catch a cab. We arranged for a driver in advance.

I think the cost was $80 for a very full day. We had to beg the driver and guide to take us to the hotel! You can find more details of our stay in Xian here:

Marija, I've just read your fabulous report of your trip to China (I was traveling when you wrote it last year) and have to thank you for the great information and the effort that you put into the writing.

I'd suggest taking the train. There's an overnight train - take the soft sleeper, which usually sleeps 4 - and you'll leave Beijing around 6pm and get into Xian at 8am. The soft sleeper will offer you pretty good bunks.
See the Warriors.
Return via a night train to Beijing.
Flying involves getting to the airport, catching the flight, getting from the airport into town - too much time wasted. Train is much easier, IMHO.
