Amazing trip report, still gleaning all kinds of goodies from it. As too your question as to the significance of the sakura falling to the ground, there is a deep cultural significance that centers around the fact that they disappear in only a couple of weeks. This echoes an ancient cultural belief in one's brief and fading existence of youth and life itself.
Additional significance comes in the form of a "sign" to the end or nearly the end, to the bitter cold of winter. It has simmilar significance to seeing a Robin (small bird) here in the United States. It signifies the coming of spring and brings about a feeling of joy and warmth in it's foreshadowing.
There may be additional superstition to actually observing the sakura falling... although I have not seen anything about that yet.

So much information, bookmarking and taking notes for our trip to Japan next year. Special thanks for your information on the extra benefits offered for the rate at your hotel in Shinjuku, as we were planning to stay in Shinjuku, just haven't picked a hotel yet.

Fall 2011 sometime late Nov till early Dec. Maybe 1 wk to 10 days on your way to or from your favorite BKK.
We can do a leisurely Hyatt tour of Japan if you like? Tokyo-Hakone-Kyoto(Osaka) maybe Fukuoka(Bostons sister city I think).Maybe a little ryokan I know on the lake in front of Mt Fuji..... Instead of the Pandaw we can do a Shinkansen tour of Japan, lol. Talk to you in Boston.
Aloha!
