Mosquitos in Ko Samui
Hi
It sounds like we're okay in Bangkok, but wanted to check on the mosquito issue in Ko Samui. Any worse than any other tropical area? We're going in a couple weeks and I've noticed it's been raining there lately. Will we be fine with the typical precautions? We're not planning to take malaria pills. Thanks!

we visited in june, so timing might be different for bugs, but we saw very few mosquitos....we did not take maleria pills there as it was not suggested as an infected area...consult your travel doctor for suggestions.....have deet with you in any case....there was a can of bug spray in our bungalow so it must be a problem at some time or potential problem... i suspect at sun down around the pool there might be a limited problem for bugs...

I've certainly experienced worse mosquitos on other islands than I ever have on Samui (Koh Ngai takes the cake on that one). However, Samui does seem to be a fairly regular source of dengue fever. If you can read Thai (I do) then as you drive around the island you'll see countless signs posted by the Health Department warning of dengue fever. None of these signs are in English.

The only prevention for dengue is to avoid being bitten. The mosquitos that carry dengue tens to be most active during the day. So use a good repellant.

When we were there in Apr a couple of years ago, there were no mosquitos during the day, but we went out to dinner one night at the outdoor hotel restaurant, and I was eaten alive as I was eating my dinner, so I would definitely spray. I didn't develop any dengue fever or malaria though, well, not that I am aware of anyways
