i've been to bkk 6 times (oct, nov, dec, jan, feb and may/june) and never remember a mosquito...that includes around the pool after dark....other types of small bugs and flies but not mosquitos...they always get me too...

The only time I've ever been biten by mosquitos in Bangkok was a stay many years ago at the Amari at the airport... the lobby was full of mosquitos! I've never been bothered in Bangkok either before or since, so it's likely a matter of exactly where you are in Bangkok as well as when.

Mosquitos can be anywhere, in any town or city regardless where you are in the world. Some of us automatically attract anything that flies.
Being on the river in BKK one might see more mossies, but not all bring disease - Malaria, West Niles, Dengue or whatever. Some are around from dusk to dawn (Malaria or West Niles) while others during the day (Dengue). And it's not just water, but "still water" where mossie eggs can breed. If you are one of those people who has a sign that says "bite me" then protect exposed skin all day long, because you won't know what will bite when, of even "if"
Bangkok and Chiang Mai are supposed to be free of Malaria mossies, but mossies fly, so who knows. Again, if not sure or if you simply want to feel safe, use repellent and take prescribed meds as necessary.
