mobile phones in Burma
On another site, one in which a Burmese travel agency provides preparation advice for a Burma trip, it states that mobile phones are NOT allowed in Burma? According to this site, visitors must report if they have one and must leave it with officials at the airport. It will be returned when one leaves the country. The preparation information was from 2011, and I believe it's the first time I've seen it. Does anyone know more about it? Is it accurate? Is the prohibition of mobile phones still in effect? If so, do smart phones fall within this category? I've just asked MM Din at Santa Maria, but may not hear back for a day or two, although he has, in general, been extremely prompt in getting back to me.

I believe that is old news, both mobiles and laptops were once not welcome in Myanmar. I wouldn't worry about it and the worst case scenario is that they will hold your phone in Yangon until you leave. Don't have any private info or pictures on your phone!

Hanuman is correct: that was once true years ago, but no longer true. It certainly was not true in 2011. Much of the info on the web - even on the website of travel agents - is inaccurate. Take along all of the electronics you want.

PHEW!!! It seemed highly unlikely since it hasn't come up once on Fodor's during the year that I've been tracking all the posts about Burma!! Just want to have my I-phone and Kindle, that's the extent of my travel electronics for now....an I-pod may be on the horizon but not for this trip. Many thanks, Hanuman and Kathie.
