My husband and I will be spending a night at a Ryokan, the Momiji-so on Miyajima Is., during a trip to Japan in March. Has anyone stayed there? If so, what did you think? I am particularly interested if anyone took dinner there. We are trying to decide if we should get dinner included. Dinner will cost an extra $115 for the two of us so I want to know if it is worth it. I really want the full experience of the Ryokan but not if the food isn't good. We both eat sushi and sashimi on a fairly regular basis so raw fish is not a problem for us. Any responses will be greatly appreciated.

$115 for a dinner for two sounds a lot but it is not expensive in Japan. I'd say it is very reasonable. Besides, it is a good idea to have your dinner ready in Miyajima. It's a small island and there are not many places to eat anyway.

I agree that you should have dinner there. We stayed at the Iwaso and the dinners there were the most memorable parts of our stay! There's not much going on in Miyajima at night anyway, as far as restaurants, etc.

Oh yes, take your meal at the ryokan. As another post says, there are very few other options in the evening if you turn it down, and this is not expensive in the Japanese context.
To be frank, if you haven't experienced kaiseki cusine before,it's likely to be SO different that you'll have a hard time judging the relative quality next to other places in Japane. Rest assured that the general standard is quite high in Japan; this is not like Europe, were you have to be on guard about paying a lot for a lousy meal.

Thanks to everyone who wrote. We will have the dinner at the Ryokan. After reading several guidebooks and seeing that a kaseki meal can cost upwards of $150 per person, it is a good deal! We will be in Tokyo prior to Miyajima and will celebrate our anniversary there, so maybe we'll splurge for a kaseki meal there so we can compare the two.
