Miyajima Island
We are considering visiting Miyajima for several days to take a break from our traveling around Japan.Would three nights be too long? Also, do you recommend any specific hotel?

It really depends on your interests! I stayed only one night, but it could just as easily have been two, as I spent essentially the full day there -- up at dawn and on the move the rest of the day. Two nights would give you a more relaxed visit, or more time to hike the island's various trails.
I was very well pleased with Momiji-so

We stayed two nights and loved it. I actually could have stayed 3 nights but two was perfect. We spent our first morning / early afternoon in the area in Hiroshima at the Peace Park and accompanying museums and then took the ferry to Miyajima at around 3:00 pm. This gave us an opportunity to stroll around the island and have a lovely dinner. The next day we went up the mountain on the funicular, as well as explored the temples and shrines in a very relaxing way and also ate the great oysters and took loads of pictures at the red floating Torii gate. We left the next day after breakfast and took the train onto Kyoto. Traditional dinner and breakfasts are a highlight as well. We stayed at Kurayado Iroha which was absolutely lovely and highly regarded. I do believe the rates are on the high end as it compares to other ryokans and there are many recommendations for fantastic places at multiple price points. We loved our time on the island, and if you fancy 3 nights, go for it!

I did not write a trip report, but am happy to answer questions.
If it helps, I was very glad to stay in Kyoto's Kawaramachi district -- good access to several different public transportation lines, lots of appealing restaurants in the area, within walking distance of several interesting areas....

I spent two nights on Miyajima in Nov. 2013 and the fall colors were spectacular. I second the delicious grilled oysters. The hiking was terrific. The floating torii is beautiful both at high and low tide. I bought a beautiful wall scroll that hangs in my master bathroom and reminds me of this enchanting island every time I look at it. Do spend at least two nights so that you are not rushed. I can't remember the exact name of the ryokan I stayed at but it is the upscale one whose name, I believe begins with a "D".

I've been to Miyajima twice--once for 1 night and once for 2. Two nights are definitely worthwhile, as other posters have indicated. Going again in April, but just for a night, to introduce my travel companion to the island. If you can afford it, the Iwaso is the classic ryokan experience--wonderful. We also have stayed at Kinsuikan, which was lovely as well, but not up to Iwaso's standard.

No trip report from me but I've no doubt posted various little bits over the years.
Here are some pieces I put up on my blog.

For Miyajima, we only went once during our first Japan trip, though we will perhaps go back on one of the upcoming trips. We had one night and would happily have spent another as there was certainly more for us to see and do.
For Kyoto, first trip we had 5 nights, first 3 in Shiraume ryokan in Gion and last 2 in the Granvia in Kyoto Station (thinking it would be handy for those parts of the itin where we needed to get around by train such as visit to Yamazaki Distillery). Staying in the station building was good, Granvia was boring, and food was way overpriced so we took NO meals there. Didn't need to with all the options on Station's 11th floor...
Second trip, we did 6 nights all in Kyoto Royal Hotel and Spa, perfect location, very very happy with it.
Third trip we did 7 nights, couldn't get the Kyoto Royal Hotel and Spa so we booked elsewhere, waaaaaaay more expensive. After 1st night, so pissed off we asked about cancellation terms, and they confirmed we could cancel the last 5 nights with no penalty, so we spent some time that evening looking online and lo and behold, found the Kyoto Royal Hotel and Spa available for the last 5 nights and much cheaper. So we switched, and even better, Kyoto Royal Hotel and Spa upgraded us on arrival to a corner suite. Is not ornate but is comfortable, spacious and the staff at front desk are super helpful. But above all, hte location could not be better for us in terms of local restaurants etc plus bus and metro routes.

I always enjoy visiting Miyajima. Though I've visited lots of times, I always from something new.
I would recommend doing at least 2 night there. You do a lot of walking to move around the island, and it's pretty crowded all times of the year. As far as hotels- it really depends on your budget. If you want a private room with no shared bathroom be prepared to pay more. I'm finding that the prices keep going up and up. I can only imagine once Starbucks moves in.
