Mid-Autumn Festival
Does anyone know when the Mid-Autumn Festival will be this year? I think it's on Sept. 18th but want to find out for sure.
Any good websites that describe local activities going on in Singapore during that week? We're coming from Shanghai on the 22nd...

Yes, it's 9/18 this year. Don't know about Singapore, but in Hong Kong, the holiday is on the next day, 9/19, which is a Monday this year. So, long weekend.
While it's a major Chinese holiday, it's mostly celebrated on the night of 9/18 (and to a lesser extend, the previous night). Kids lit their lanterns, and everybody eats mooncake under the moon. That's basically it.

Thanks! Is there anything else going on in Shanghai around that time? Will be in Shanghai from Sept 17-22 and then Singapore from Sept 22-27. Time to stock up on mooncakes! They're hard to find and rather expensive in the U.S...

I'm American (based in Chicago) but I travel a lot and have been coming to mainland China & HK a couple of times a year for the last few years. This is my first trip to Singapore, but I love to shop and eat and Singapore seems to be just the place!
I've only tried a few kinds of mooncakes so far. I know I like the sweet fillings best - red bean paste, lotus seed or nuts - and no egg yolks! I should probably try the savory flavors sometime. I don't think I'd care for the ice cream variety.
Mooncakes pack well, are handy to have on long flights for a snack and make tasty gifts. Sometimes I can find them here in Chinatown (Chicago, San Francisco, New York, etc...) though there's not much of a selection and only at certain times of the year.
I've seen your posts many times and you always have great advice and tips. Any suggestions on where else to go?

Lia - I like the traditional Cantonese style mooncake, made with white lotus paste and 2 salty egg yolks. That's the best balance for me.
Well, I've only been to Singapore a couple of times, and never been to Shanghai (officially). So, can't give you much suggestion.
