Malarone-weekly dose?

I've heard there are two ways to take Malarone to prevent contracting malaria; once a week & every day.

What is the once a week dosage?

I know that you have to start a week in advance & take in a week after we return.

Our MD only knows the daily dosage, which my stomach will NOT tolerate.

There is no such thing as a once a week dosage with Malarone. The medication you can take once a week is Lariam. It is generally not recommended for SEA as there is resistance.

Take one adult tablet (250 mg Atovaquone/100 mg Proguanil) daily beginning 2 days prior to entering a malaria risk zone and continuing for 7 days after leaving the risk zone. Take with a meal with dairy or other fat to optimize absorption.

Malarone is not particularly hard on your stomach...we had a reduced appetite, but no pain or upset. I haven't actually heard of anyone being unable to tolerate Malarone because of stomach upset, but I have heard that about Doxycycline (your other option).

I read the other day that there is an outbreak of malaria in the Koh Ker area on the PLF's website on someone's report...some of the children at Koh Ker school are apparently suffering from malaria.

Kim is right, there is no weekly malarone dose. Do go to the cdc website and read the information about anti-malarials. Your doctor should also read this before prescribing if you are going to your primary care doc rather than a travel medicine specialist.

wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/default.aspx will take you to the index page

Some people do get stomach upset from malarone. You can mitigate this by taking it with food. Recent information indicates It should always be taken with a food that contains fat, as one of the ingredients is fat-soluble. You should also take it at approximately the same time each day.

I took it once a day while on two different trips to Ghana. And I did have stomach upset along with very strange, and vividly colorful dreams. One day I was in bed due to the stomach problem from it. Happy Travels!

My MD know nothing about it, I had the pharmacists at WALGREEN'S MAIL call him to tell him how to Rx it.

We got enough for a 5 week trip, 35, which will be enough for us to both take it for 15 days.

Thank you very much for the info on Koh Ker, we are going there our first day... we will spay ourselves w/ 30% DEET, spray our pants/shirts w/ pyrith. spray.

I may even wear mosquito netting over our giant sunhats to keep them off of our faces/necks.

Did you get 35 pills? What did the pharmacist say? How will you take the malarone?

Mosquito netting over a sunhat? Oh how I miss Oksana!

I wonder if Hermes makes a bee suit? That would've worked out perfectly.
