Looking to combine Hong Kong with short trip to Guilin/Yangshou
Was planning 9 day trip to Thailand in Nov. Political unrest leads me to seek alternative while keeping prized ticket to Hong Kong. Would 4 days Hong Kong and 4-5 days side trip to Guilin, Li River and Yangshou be good alternative for 2 sophisticated guys?
Thanks for your suggestions!

While Guilin is a beautiful city, all things being relative, I'd concentrate on the vicinity of Yangshuo and in particular, the countryside outside Yangshuo. The area of the Yulong River is quite beautiful, rural still and peaceful and I recommend it especially.
Having spent some time in the area, I'd suggest, yes, 4 days in HKG, a brief stop in Guilin (coming or going) and the rest outside Yangshuo. Depending on your budget, there are some surprisingly "sophisticated" places to stay in the countryside.

I suggest you not bother with local agents. You can make your own accommodation bookings online and anything you want to do, you can arrange yourself when you get there. Generally speaking, any plans done by a local agent are likely to be second rate and more expensive. The best things there are walks, bicycle rides and boat rides, all easily accomplished on your own. If you need a taxi to go somewhere, your accommodation can get you one and probably far cheaper.

I speak only English and did fine. You can always have someone who speaks English, for instance, write down names of destinations for taxi drivers for you. Not a problem if you anticipate.
Book hotels or other accommodations directly on their websites or by email.

Andie,,these pics of the vicinity might give you some famiiarization wth the area. I highly recommend you get out to Longshen and the rice fields. About a three hour drive. Stay overnight if you wish. The colorful photgraph showing the long-haired women was featured in the Los Angeles Times as a weekly pic choice.

There is now a bus from the Guilin airport to Yangshuo. Yangshuo probably has the highest proportion of population speaking english in all of China.
You can pretty much organize everything by yourself once you get there with some help from your hotel. You can always hire a cheap guide for the day. Despite having been there 6 times, I always get lost when going bicycling out of town as maps are not precise at all.

Andie..if you need a driver to take you to the terraced rice fields at Longshen/Longji...contact Jade Leo in Guilin, He assigned two very knowledgeable, fun (good English)young guys to us (see pix) and they made the day a great one. JUst type in "Jade Leo" and you'll get his colorful web pages. Price seemed reasonable when we compared with others.
