Logistics of Beijing to Hong Kong with maximum freedom
Let me give you guys some background: I'm from the US and I've been able to traverse the entire continent on my own time table, go to all the places I wished to go, and had complete freedom to go wherever and stay for however long I wanted. No tour buses. No hitchhiking. No hotels. No motels.
That's because I had a car and an open road and a tent.
This is the kind of traveling that I like to do. Freedom to go wherever for however long and on the cheap. To be able to full explore a place and also carry gear such as laptop and camera equipment with me (I work my day job remotely and must have a laptop and a way to get to reliable internet at all times, whether it's a library, starbucks, or 3G).
Now that I want to travel internationally I don't know what to do.
How do I do this in China? To go from Beijing to Hong Kong? Fly in to Beijing, fly out from Hong Kong, and see everything I want to see on a whim along the way.

You will not drive yourself in China. That simple. As a foreign tourist you can't get a license.
On the other hand, loads of trains and buses. See seat61.com for trains and Lonely Planet or Rough Guide for ideas about buses.
But first you've got to get that visa, right?

Oh, I think he is serious about it - he does want to travel internationally - he's just clueless about how different China is from the US.
If you really want to do this, start doing some serious research. Begin with the guidebooks recommended by Thursdays. You'll have to adapt your travel style - buses and trains rather than driving yourself, guesthouses rather than camping.
