so sorry to have been away during this flurry and especially sorry to Cicerone, and all who had to read through what were apparently very negative posts. Good that the moderators were able to tend to this and so quickly. Good call jacketwatch. Thank you.
Cicerone, thank you for the extremely helpful post, taxes were not considered, so we have more work to do on this.
To answer rkkwan, our budget is near US$3500, and as for size, 2 rooms with basic food prep area (kitchenette would do). We tend to be relatively basic in our needs: clean, safe, affordable, near shopping and of course eating. The mention of serviced apartments has us looking in that direction, but now that there is a tax concern, we have to work on this.
Sincerely appreciate all of the helpful information, and good folks here. Thank you so very much.

I am glad this has been helpful for you. For the most part this board is a great resource and you will get mostly appropriate replies form its members. This is not always the case and I am glad the mods acted so swiftly to keep this thread going forward.
I really liked HK which we stopped off at our our way home from India in 2010 and just wished I had planned more that four days there.
Have a great adventure.
Larry.

My parents usually stay for a month in late spring and another month in late fall in HK. Most recently, they are spending HK$23k each time for a serviced apartment in Causeway Bay. That's US$3k for a studio apartment of only about 500sq feet.
$3500 really won't get you very far for a serviced apartment in HK, let me tell you, especially in the city.
Personally, I have stayed at the Royal View Hotel for extended periods, which have serviced apartment units. Not very convenient, but in a nice area and for the same money it will get you a little further than in the city.
