mrwunrfl, I just added up the fares in hyperdia.....maybe I was wrong then - have you come up with another figure - to me it looked like a total of about 7500 JPY and Farina50 seemed to imply an additional pass was necessary as the journey would take a whole day. Since those trains are in the southern part the All Kyushu Pass at 14400 JPY would be needed. Possibly I jumped to the wrong conclusion then....sorry.

kalihiwai2 - they did this trip on the NHK show Train Cruise....A Century Old Railway in Kyushu - hopefully they will repeat it if you missed it....they repeat everything else. ;-) There is a new one scheduled for next weekend, fyi, about Lake Biwa trains.

Mara,

mrwunrfl,
I was speaking out loud, but this is a rough itin.
Day 1 Yamaguchi to Arita
Day 2 Arita to Nagasaki
Days 3,4,5 Nagasaki
Day6 Nagasaki to Kumamoto
Days 6,7 Kumamoto
Day8 Kumamoto to Kagoshima possibly spend the night somewhere if the train schedule involves long waits
Days8 or 9,10,11 Kagoshima
Then either Kagoshima to Yufuin/Aso/Beppu for two days or straight to Fukuoka and three days there

I'm also trying to take the Yufuin no Mori train from Yufuin to Fukuoka and if it turns out I can get that reservation then the last bit will change as well. Hope that's clear.
As a child we frequently travelled by train that's why I'm planning the last legs around the train ride.
Farina

Mara, you are in the right ballpark for the three trains in your link. You are right about not needing two passes.

I think the price is lower, ¥6,960, per Route3 here:
http://tinyurl.com/mdck8ye

Route3 uses a different limited express on the first leg of the trip (from Kumamoto), but the fare would be the same for the Kumagawa L'Ex (which is shown in Route1 and Route2).

That gets you from Kumamoto to Kagoshima-Chuo. To get back from Kagoshima-Chuo to Kumamoto would cost another ¥6,960.

So that comes out to about ¥14,000 for the day trip from Kumamoto.

mrwunrfl - I rounded up as sometimes the special trains have extra reservation fees....That happened to me going on the Kitakinki Tango Railway from Nishimaizuru to Amanohashidate. I got to sit in the fancy car that was shown on another of the NHK Train Cruise programs - for a whole 300 or some JPY.....

Farina50, yes, that's it! Thanks for the link.

I don't think Farina 50 wants to return to Kumamoto after the ride on the special trains.....

Mara, I don't know what the OP wants

Farina50, I was writing my last post when you posted before me, so I am just seeing it now.

Your itinerary is a moving target. I thought about asking what are you doing before Nagasaki and after Fukuoka, but focused on an 11-day Nagasaki-Kumamoto-Hakata/Fukuoka plan with an option to day trip to Kagoshima.

To finish my thoughts on that itinerary: you would only need a 5-day All Kyushu Area pass, starting in Nagasaki.

Now it is a 14-day trip starting in Yamaguchi. You might want to price it all out and see if a 14-day all Japan pass would work. Or a 7-day JR Pass and some combo of one or more Kyushu passes.

Good luck.
