Kowloon or HK Island?

Looking at either the Regal Kowloon or Regal Hong Kong to stay. Location is only difference in my eyes. Should we stay in Kowloon or on Hong Kong Island?

Stanley,
Without commenting on the hotels (I'm not particualarly familiar with them, anyway), I'd opt for the Kowloon side, particularly Tsim-Sha-Tsui. for the following reasons:
1. The view across the harbor to HK island is magnificent, especially as dusk turns into evening. You can't see that when you're on the island.
2. The trip across to HK island on the Star Ferry is worth the experience, even if you don't have any reason in particular to go.
3. Some parts of the island go to sleep at night. Kowloon seems to wake up (night markets, restaurants, plain old interesting street scene). There are many interesting places to see and shop during the day, also.
4. I've not been there since the new airport opened, but a look at the public transportation makes it clear that getting to a hotel on the Kowloon side would be quicker.

Basically, it's a convenient and more interesting place to stay, and won't in any way hinder your exploration of the rest of HK.

Stanley, I agree with Les, definitely Kowloon for the same reasons. Besides that the Regal Kowloon seems to be slightly cheaper according to my HK hotel guide. So, one reason more.
Don't miss tea at the "Pensinsula" and the sunset from the "Regent" bar (both Kowloon as well). I hope these posts will make your decision easier. Have a nice trip!

I'd agree with the preference to stay in Kowloon. I found it to be much more lively at night. When I stayed on Hong Kong Island, I found myself taking the metro to Kowloon to shop in the markets in the evening.

I had to pipe in with my two cents, since I disagree with the other two posters. The first person has a very good point about taking the ferry and seeing the view of Hong Kong island, but you can take the ferry FROM HK side and then walk around the promenade on Kowloon side to enjoy the view.

I REALLY prefer HK side. There is an endless supply of things to do and see on either side, but in my last 3 visits there, I haven't gone over to Kowloon side even once. (The night market is over there, so you do need to do that!)

I think the shops are much nicer on HK side, particularly the wonderful antique shops along Hollywood Road. I also really enjoy the shops, restaurants and bars in the SoHo district along the elevated walkway. That area is really fun both during the day and at night (when it is quite active).

ALso, the biggest bar area in Hong Kong is called Lan Kwai Fong and it's on HK side. It's a several block area that seems like it's all bars and restaurants - at about 9 or 10 p.m., it starts filling up with HK-ers and expats coming off work. With the nice weather, the bars are all open to the street, with tables and counters on the sidewalks. It's such a fun, vibrant area!

HK side gets my vote!

(All this being said, however, either side is only a 5 minute metro ride or scenic ferry ride to the other, so you can't go wrong either way)

Sorry, again Kowloon gets my vote. I think you'll get more of a feel of the real HONG KONG by staying on the Kowloon side.

Although the Regal Kowloon is in Kowloon, it is in Tsim Sha Tsui East, meaning a little bit away from the virbrating part of Kowloon. You have to walk at least 20 min to the next MTR Station at Nathan Road or Star Ferry. So I would recommend either Regal Hong Kong because there you have the famous HK Tram, MTR and Causeway Bay Shopping Area next to the hotel. But if you prefer Kowloon, you should stay at the Sheraton, the Grand Eagle or the Holiday Inn Golden Mile they offer First Class Standard within the most vibrant area of Kowloon

Thanks for all the great posts, I'm leaning for the Regal Hong Kong as it seems to be the nicer hotel with quick access to the metro. Further comments will be appreciated.

I totally agree with Les, We stayed at the Ritz Carlton Central, which is a good location, but expensive and the rooms were small. Highlight restaraunt Felix overlooking central Hong Kong.
