koh samui in October?

We are planning a trip to Thailand in October. We will spend some time in Bangkok, but then would like to head to a beautiful beach. I know it's rainy season, but would it be better to go to Koh Samui or Phuket (or somewhere else with a beach??) during that time (second week of October)? Any recommendations of where to stay? Thanks!

Spent the second week of October on the small island of Koh Tao, north of Ko Samui. Only one nite of lite showers. Islands in bay less rain that time of year than Phuket. Go to Koh Samui.

Forgot to mention I got drenched on boat on way to island. Forgot my poncho. Forget umbrellas, they are useless.

Have spent a few different occasions in the southern islands. Heavy rains generally in November, early december. Stay away from Koh Samui these days. Too many package holidays from Europe. Koh Phagnan is far better and Thong Ni Pan is wonderful. I bit of a journey once you land in Koh Samui, but well worth it. Much cheaper than Samui and better beaches. Koh Tao is great if you want to go diving.

I was in Phuket in March and in Koh Samui a few weeks ago. I loved the beaches on both islands, but I really think it depends upon where you'll be staying. The Laguna Phuket area is much quieter than Patong, and the beaches less crowded. I stayed at the Allamanda for about $100/night. On Koh Samui I stayed at the Beachcomber Hotel on Chaweng Beach. I'd highly recommend it - fabulous hotel for only about $50/night.
