KL + Penang or Langkawi ???

My husband and I are looking for a holiday for March 2000. We have decided on KL but can't make our minds up between Penang or Langkawi. We don't want anywhere too commercialised but would like to have a choice of bars / restaurants /shops etc.
We have been put off Penang because of reports of pollution etc.
(We have been to Phuket and really like the Karon / Kata area but not Patong !!!)
Does anyone have any good advice please ?
Is there another resort in Malaysia that fits the bill - maybe on the East coast ?

We have visited Penang & Phuket in 93 , & Langkawi in 95.Langkawi is more pristine with beautiful small islands & jungle-clad hills , but not much clubs & restaurants except at the various hotels.Penang is certainly more developed & congested & has lots of food outlets.I liked Langkawi more , but my wife preferred Penang.Have a nice holiday wherever you choose!

Hi Cathy,

I went to K.L. and Penang two years ago with my husband and two children. We found K.L. very congested and fairly awkward to get around (for the traffic), but found some good sightseeing on the outskirts. We spent 10 days in Penang and loved it, you can combine relaxing days on the beach or by the pool, or sightseeing tours in the beautiful countryside with plenty of good shopping in Georgetown. On Batu Ferringhi (the road which most hotels are on) is about a 20 minute taxi ride from Georgetown, so you are away from the hustle but not too far for shopping. Stalls are set up at night down Batu Ferringhi for friendly, casual browsing and souvenir shopping. We did a one day tour to Langkawi and, obviously, didn't see all there is to see, but we weren't too impressed, the scenery is beautiful but there seemed very little to do, or choices for eating etc., unless you like to stay in the hotel grounds and relax. We are going to Bangkok and Phuket in September, and have chosen the Patong area, can you tell me why you didn't like it and what to avoid as it's too late to change our booking now. Can you suggest any good places to visit, eat or whatever on Phuket? Got any other advice?

P.S. Didn't notice any pollution on Penang other than perhaps the traffic in Georgetown. Just remember the place won't be spotless, but it certainly didn't spoil our holiday. My friend has just returned from Penang after taking my advise to go there instead of Bali. (Their first time overseas.) They had a ball and didn't want to leave.

PPS If I can be of any more help, or if you can help me, reply here or feel free to email me.

Thanks, Teresa.

Penang is fine, though the beaches wouldn't be as great as those in Langkawi. But in Penang you will have other places to explore, like the historical places. If you are thinking of the East Coast, there's Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang, both are beautiful islands. But I don't think you would find a great variety of restaurants/bars/shops here though. But it is a very good place to dive/snorkel and just relax. I have been to Langkawi and Redang, Langkawi is nice, been there twice, but I really fell in love with Redang! Hope you have a great trip.

Hi Cathy,
Just got back yesterday from Malaysia.
What a wonderful time we've had! We spent two days in KL, wonderful, then flew to Langkawi for 6 nights. I can recommend Langkawi , but don't tell too many people. I am from Holland and there were a lot of Dutch people (which was not as we had thought or hoped for!)
The beaches are heavenly , clean, wide, everything you hope for. The people are friendly. It is safe everywhere, ask me anything you like, if I can help you I will. Have you already decided and what hotel are you staying in KL and or Langkawi or Penang? ( by the way Penang is more touristy, i've heard)
Let me know and have fun!

I too am considering visiting either Penang or Langkawi with two children, 7, 9. I hear Penang has more activity -- architecture, restaurants, and sights in general, and sounds like a good combination with beaches for the kids. Anyone agree? Also, has anyone heard of the E&O hotel in Penang?

Beaches aren't great in Penang, and they are beautiful in Langkawi, but you will have a nice time in either place. The Malaysian people are very friendly and we liked Georgetown (so did our kids). Maybe you can squeeze in both. If you go to Penang, take a half day or so to head up to Penang Hill via the rail car (I can't remember what they call it). It is so beautiful up there, and very cool compared to the hot city. There is good food available at the one hotel up there, and it's a great place to hike, watch butterflies, observe a few giant millipedes (my kids' favorite activity), visit an aviary and temple, and just chill out with a beer. You can also hike up from the Botanic Gardens if you're inclined to do so. Have fun. Barbara
