Khao Lak
Hello all,
I have a few questions about the Khao Lak area. We have a 5 night stay at JW at the end of our honeymoon this coming January. I've read plenty about the "pool access" rooms but I am having trouble finding information on the spa villa rooms. Does anyone know where on the resort these rooms are located or how private they are? Also, if we would like to eat off of the resort or go out for the night what are our options? We will not have a car.

The Khao Lak area runs up the Andaman Coast for over 20 Kms, and is hemmed in by the very busy Highway 4.
There's 2 main townships. The one to the south is called Bang La On, and is about an hour by taxi from Phuket Airport. We stayed in Bang La On for a week recently, and enjoyed it
About 3 Kms north of Bang La On is Bang Niang. There's a very popular afternoon/evening market there on Monday/Wednesday/Saturday which attract lots of tourists from the big hotels strung along the coast. We also stayed at Bang Niang for a week, and to be honest we thought it was scruffy by day, but in the dark when the lights come on the place was alright, but nothing more than alright.
The JW Marriott is a few Km north of Bang Niang (75 minutes by taxi from the Airport). Too far to walk to either Bang Niang or Bang La On. No doubt the JWM runs shuttles, or a taxi will cost about 300 baht each way.
If you don't get much response on this thread, then there is stacks of information and local maps on Khao Lak [and the JWM) on the Trip Advisor Khao Lak Forum...

Our local expert on the JW in Khao Lak is currently on a transatlantic cruise, and likely has no internet connection.
You should be able to get a better feel for the spa villa rooms on the hotel website.
The hotel can get you a taxi or a tuk-tuk to go anywhere you want.

In the absence of the forum 'expert' the following link is JWM specific, and will answer all your questions and more besides...

No tuks tuks in Khao Lak, so it's either taxi or songthaew...

One of the problems with many of the big hotels along the Andaman Coast is that they're quite remote, and you need wheels to get around.

We have always rented a car in Khao Lak as, for the reasons given by LL, it makes it so much easier to get around without relying on taxis. That said if you only want yo of out for one night then a taxi will suffice.
There are a lot of places to eat out in KL, some good some not so good. For some reason food tends to be a bit more expensive there than elsewhere in Thailand. I can't say I was overwhelmed by the food scene there. The best place we ate at was one of the seafood stalls in the market.
Can't help with the rooms at the JWM I'm afraid.

A car would be very helpful if you intend to eat out... Driving is easy there.
There are tons of restaurants in town, but getting there and back is a pain.
Hotel food prices are NOT outrageous.
Ask Alex, the #2 mgmt guy for restaurant suggestions.
I do not know of any spa villa rooms....
