You should buy gold jewelry in CHinatown only if you are looking for 22-23 karat gold. This gold is very soft, and is very "gold" colored. Not everyone likes it, nor is it particularly practical for daily wear as it dents, scratches and bends easily.
If you are interested in buying jewelry, sapphires and rubies are the best deal. Do a search here on the board and you'll find that I often answer questions about buying jewelry shopping in Bangkok, as I have a jeweler I've been buying from for some 20 years. Make sure you know about the jewelry scams, never buy from a place that hasn't been recommended by someone you know, and know about teh stones/jewelry you are buying and what it would cost at home.
