If you are serious, I seriously suggest going somewhere other than Kashmir at this time. Have you not been reading the news? Do you want to take your kid to occupied territory? A lot of other mountains to explore in that area, e.g. Ladakh.

Last month, some restrictions lifted but "continued security risks" (read violent attacks) continue to be an issue. Having read email reports from a friend of a friend who lived there & left, though I'm no wimp, I wouldn't go & especially not with a child.

That leaves a whole lot of India, not to mention other Himalayan areas in Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan. However, it might be a good time to go south - Kerala, Tamil Nadu, maybe Goa if you want beach time for the kid.

Where are you departing from?
Are you 100% set on India or open to other places?

Darjeeling / Sikkim?

Lower elevations should be warmer than Ladakh, and rhododendrons might be starting to bloom.

Consider Kerala. Earlier in March is probably a bit cooler.
