JTB ideas for Kyoto and...

We found JTB in San Francisco very kind and helpful. They can get us 6 nights at the Westin Mikayo in Kyoto for 28,500 yen (lower than on Website where there are no rooms available for nights we want Nov 21-27). Has anyone stayed there, thoughts on hotel, location, price? They suggest Benten No Yad Hsukima for Miyajia and Imi Kan Yoshine for Shirakawa-go.

We are also thinking of making our last night in Kyoto a splurge ryokan...? Special places

Reports are that some of the rooms are very good, and the lower priced/entry level rooms are very poor. I'd be careful about asking exactly what room you can get for that price.

Hiiragiya is supposed to be very, very nice and is very familiar with foreigners as guests. Outside of Kyoto is Kibune Ugenta, which looks wonderful.

I don't know the place in Shirakawa-go. Do be aware that the minshuku in the actual gassho village are not reservable through a travel agent...they don't pay commission to the agents. I can't even find the place you mention anywhere...Yoshino could actually be the name of a town or a person. Anyway, I can't find it anywhere, so I'd be afraid it would be nowhere near the gassho village. Maybe check the name again and get the address...and a website if they have it...I can check for you where it is even if it's Japanese.

Miyajima, they recommend this place.. http://bentennoyado.com/english/ They have several classes of rooms, so be sure your price is for the type of room you want and is competitive. On their Japanese language website they offer various stay plans, many of which are under ¥20,000/person/night including 2 meals/tax/service...much less expensive than their English page.

I'm also seeing the Westin Miyako Kyoto as having no rates for any date after August...so I would bet there are no rates loaded into the online system yet for September on. Japanese language booking has no rates loaded after July. If that is your hotel of choice, you could phone them directly (the hotel, not the reservations line) in Japan and make a reservation. For dates before then, I'm seeing rates as low as ¥13,000/night.

On closer inspection, the ¥13,000/night rooms are singles. Doubles start at ¥20,000 or so.

I picked up a Kyoto magazine today, and this place had an ad and looks nice enough and very reasonably priced. http://www.kyotowa.jp/english/index.html
