Japan Are Shorts acceptable?

I will be traveling to Osaka Japan tomorrow to cover an NFL game. I understand it is very hot right now. Are nice shorts and an open collar shirt acceptable.

I have been to Europe many times but not Japan. I know sneakers scream tourist, but I will be working very fast and furious to get my job done. I just don't want to look like a schmuck when I get the few hors I will to site see.

I would also like to know what Temples would be close to see. I will be staying at the Rihga Royal Hotel.

Japanese (men and women)wear shorts, sneakers and golf shirts all over.
I'd take a suit if you expect to be invited out to a formal dinner or will be meeting people in a business setting. Otherwise nice shorts or pressed slacks are fine.

Bonjour Greg,

I second Lcuy advice: go ahead with your nice shorts and sneakers, pack something more formal (no need for a tie or even a jacket, though) if you have to meet someone in a business setting. Beware of shoes with laces, since you'll have to take them off in many places, from the inside of temples to many traditional restaurants.

Just a word of caution to all: Japanese will seldom be offended by what a foreigner (gaijin) wears, but are very sensitive to body odors, especially since they tend to sweat less than Caucasians and Africans, and they're used to at least one scalding hot bath a day.

Being a Japanese,‚hcan tell Lcuy and Florence are absolutely right.

As to@body-odor thing Florence mentions, that makes me smile. The only time I sweat is when I have drunk beer. Don't worry about this too much. But sometimes we get sensitive. And we appreciate it a lot when gaijin shows certain sensitivities too. Well this may not help Greg greatly. Too vague?

Thank you all you have been most helpful. I travel all over the world but have never had the privelege of going to Japan.

Yes, I have heard the word Gaijin. I try not to be the "Dirty American" (including bathing, hehe) whenever I travel.

If you happen to watch American football I will be the one running around frantically trying to make sure you have the best sound quality for the game.

To Florence: Bon Soir. I will be in Paris in September. The second love of my life. My first of course is my wife.

Thanks Again
