Is a temple stay in Koyasan suitable for a child?
Hi, we are traveling with a 5 year old child. Both husband and I are keen on doing a night's stay at Koyasan, however I am not sure if children are allowed and if so, is it is a good idea to do this type of stay with a small child. Please advise.

Most places will probably allow children, but to be sure, ask the places your are interested in directly. I would also ask your child if he/she is interested in doing a stay, being sure to describe the whole stay. When our daughter was 5, she was game for most anything, and still is now. Not all kids are the same though...

I believe your child would be allowed, but should you do it? That depends on all sorts of things--activity level, boredom threshold, bathing requirements, food preferences, sleeping needs, etc.
I'm not sure what your other accommodation arrangements will be in Japan, but in my experience a temple stay at Koyasan isn't much different in terms of food, room, and bathing than a ryokan would be. The larger environment is of course different. So, if the three of you are otherwise prepared to stay at a traditional ryokan in a historic old setting, than Kyosan would present no special problems. If you need the sound- insulating qualities and private bath and familiar foods that a western-style hotel provides, then Koyasan temple lodging would not offer those amenities.
