India/ Rajastan Jan/Feb 2010 Nagaur Festival

We are thinking our next trip will be a return to India. We want to spend the bulk of our time in Rajastan possibly visiting the Nagaur Festival. Does anyone have any feedback on this festival?
Our previous trips to India have been in Sept - Nov time. What are the downsides of Jan or Feb?
The rough plan at the moment is, fly into Delhi spend just one night there to sleep! (We have spent time in Del before). Then we need to figure out how to divide about 20 nights. Definately 2 in Agra (we did not like just 1 last time) 2 in Varanasi (yes this will be a flight/sidetrip probably at the end of the time). Possibly 2-3 nights in Jaisalmer & then also Jodpur, Udipur, Pushgar & elsewhere just need to get a feel for that. Obviously if we are the go to the Nagaur festival we will have time there. So we preferably want 2 nights in the majority of places. We like to drive & yes we know what the roads are like. But of course if a flight will save us lots of time we will do it. I am thinking we will get some sort of car service but only get a guide as we think we need on in any location. I was thinking I would try to scout out hotels & book them myself but my hubby thinks an agency may be able to find us some places that we would not be able to find? Any thoughts. We will not be looking for super lux accomidations.
So do any of you have any thoughts on what I have put down here? Any recomendations for an agency to arrange a car & possibly hotels? I am thinking I can book the flight to Varanasi online once I figure out schedules etc. Kingfisher seems to get great reviews everywhere what other domestic airlines should I look for?

Thanks all so much. J

P.S am I the only one still having trouble finding things on this new forum? I feel like I am wondering in a maze sometimes!

Type in India or Naugar or other key terms into the search box above. It should pull up previous threads with those terms.

Go in February rather than January because January is the coldest month and fog is a big problem which cause flight and train delays, even road travel can be hazardous if it's too foggy. February is usually perfection for weather in India.

This fair is the second largest Cattle fair in Rajasthan and Nagaur fair is very good - This fair is the second largest Cattle fair in Rajasthan every year in the month of Magh (January/February). The Fair is renowned for the trading of cows, bullocks, oxen, camels and horses, which takes place here and Nagaur is a sea of animals, trading over 70,000 bullocks, camels and horses every year. The Nagaur bulls are renowned for their fleet footedness and attract buyers from all over.

The dates for 2010 are 22 to 25 Jan, 2010..

However during this time there are two other festivals also - namely -
Baneshwar Fair - Dungarpur - 26/30 Jan
Desert Festival - Jaisalmer - 28/30 Jan

Baneshwar is a very intersting fair as it is a unique gathering of tribal people from all over Rajasthan and surrounding areas of Madhya Pradesh + Gujarat. It is a less touristy fair also.

You can even visit Baneshwar fair as a day excursion from Udaipur.

October to March every year is the peak season however and the rates are higher than lower season which is bacially April to September.

I suggest you contact an agency called - Yatrik.com - which has handled specialised tour for lot of my friends and even lot of people from the Fodor Forum - Yiu can ask them to organise the trip. Their e-mail is [email protected].

All the best

Nagaur Fair is an excellant destination to be in, if you wish to see the actual trading of cattle especially the large & sturdy Nagauri Ox, which was a mainstay of Indian farmers before the advent of the mechanised farming. Small & marginal farmers still use these oxen for tilling. Apart from these buffaloes, goats & high pedigree cows are also sold. The fair is colourful, as lots of small shops selling knick-knacks, inluding the stout sticks, beautifully inlaid with brass & agricultural tools spring up.
Fort Khimsar, 25 miles south of the fair grounds or the luxury tented accomodation at Nagaur Fort, offer fine accomodation.
Happy travels!

Well its my opinion only and if you all have been there during Nagaur Fair { I presume so }
Nagaur Fair has nothing for Foreigner . The whole ground because of local villagers can't even let you take breath .Its all dust every where !!!! and unlike Pushkar Fair no local artist .... Its too noisy with loudspeaker at altavoce and what you see Local sweet stall , Khadigramodhyog
state goverment stall selling stuff and animal sit all around .I have seen two foreign group refuse to spend more than 10 minutes there . I think we should be candid with the situtaion and not write as we read in publicity material .Its even worst to Jaislamer Fair .Atleast in Jaislamer they do organise some activity interested to Foreigner in & around Sam or Khuri desert .
Its so bad in Nagaur that now they have also announce Sufi Performance at Nagaur Fort { close by } . well this could be nicer as you need these great Sufi Musician atleast to bring the sanctity of ambience in the evening .But the Tent & ambience which they pitch { His highness Jodhpur Maharaja company } is too cold & boaring and they are not considering to upgrade the facilities in Tents as we have in diffrent part of India . So if you are bound to go there , just get down from car , suffer till such time you can and continue to Khimsar Sanddunes -A Picture Postcard perfect destination { 1&1/2 Hours } or if you can drive 2 hours more spend the night Reggie Singh Camel Camp Osian .
At Varanasi you can stay at NADESAR PALACE { TAJ GROUP} Recently open or Palace on Ganges { Budget Class }

Well To answer my other Freinds my comments are my own { no offense means } and may be cynical but no camouflage .Be a real Indian - Lead India !!!

I read all you but don't share much as I feel this place is been highjack by few .
Congrats VP SINGH - Sir you always write the best

Caution must be exercised in projecting Nagaur Fair as a mega event, on the lines of Pushkar. It is an event, on an eventful Rajasthan tour itinerary. You must not dilate your plan to accomodate Nagaur fest, but if in that vicinity, your visit shall be rewarded by what you see, the 'Gadia Lohar' tribals, the red chillies in heaps for sale & stalls stretching for a considerable distance, on the road to Sikar.
I wonder if they still have the cockerel fights...!

I do understand that Nagaur will be nowhere near the scale of Pushkar. As you suggest if our itinerary has us going nearby then we will visit to see a different piece of Rahasthan. Thanks VP & everyone.

I HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING THE NAGAUR FAIR>

in many places it reads that it is an 8 day fair, but then it says the dates are Jan 22 - 25 which is four days.
any how....we are planning to arrive on Jan 24th, evening and spend the day on the 25th before heading back to Jodhpur. Does anyone know if the fair will still be in full swing on the last day? Would it be worth it to go for that time. Our flight arrives in Jodhpur at 1240P on Jan 24th and then we would have to find a taxi to take us to Nagaur which I understand is another 3 hour drive so we would not get there until at least 4PM.
thanks.
