India and Trains
Need help in understanding the different classes of train travel. During our travels one of the train trips we want to take is from Guwahati to Varanasi. My understanding is the best two choices are:
(1) AC 1st Class -- 18 hrs starting at 7 am or
(2) AC 2 tier -- 22 hours (half as much as 1 above)
Both trip allows us to rest but at the same time view the India country side.
What is the difference in comfort?
This is a long trip and we want to enjoy the trip.
Thanks,
Tom

Lots of infoon Indian trains, incl pix, at http://seat61.com/India.htm. I don't think 1AC is worth the price, but you may - 2AC has curtained sections rather than compartments with doors. Where are you getting the schedules? I only see the 18 hour train (with both 1AC and 2AC) on http://www.indianrail.gov.in/. That puts you into Varanasi at 1:40 in the morning, too.

I haven't added a class option (yet) but have put together a nifty little search engine getting from point a to b.
It's unique in that it will find multi train routes if there are no direct trains.
