Kavey: its not surprising the hosts treated you that way. I too found the Japanese to be very gracious.

Yes, very much so. This felt above and beyond to me but I am sure that we would have been treated similarly had this happened at any one of many places we stayed.

Thanks for the tips, guys! @blackmons Good to know you're okay. This situation is an example where first aid kits come handy! I agree with @jacketwatch, Japanese people are very helpful and hospitable.
