Immunizations are VERY expensive...

I'm rather surprised by the cost of immunizations for Hep.A+B I've called 3 or 4 travel clinics in the Atlanta area and they are all quite close at about $160 PER SHOT (3 shots).
Typhoid is about $60 for the shot or pills.
The hep. immunization is quite a chunk of change adding $1000 to a vacation for 2 people.

Does this seem right? I thought i saw people saying Hep shots were like $75?

sometimes they are cheaper at walk in clinics or non travel doctors. Your normal GP should be bale to give you those for sure. Typhoid is worth it if you are going to underdeveloped countries but you can still get typhoid even with the immunization. I know mine in Minnesota were much less than what you quoted.

The least expensive place to get travel immunizations is your local public health clinic if they offer them. Many vaccines should be covered by your insurance (Hep A & B, for example)and the office visit is likely covered. I paid $40 for the typhoid pills (good for 5 years) at my pharmacy, my regular doc prescribed them for me.

In some places commercial travel clinics are very expensive. You local medical school likely has a travel clinic, and often prices are better there. You may have to shop for the best care at the best price.

Just called my insurance, and only "routine" immunizations are covered, which is odd, specially since i have an HRA.
I will try calling my local health clinic.

Also, i could, if i'm not interested in long term protection just get the 1st shot of the Hep A+B right? We have no plans to go back for a long while, so that may be an option.

You really don't get full coverage until after two shots. The Hep A vaccine is worth having even if you are stayiong at home, as there are outbreaks in the US.

As someone who deals with medical insurance companies often, what they say and what they pay for may be different. If your internist gives you the Hep A series, they may well pay for it.

Jason, I'm in Atlanta and I use the County Health Dept - travel dept. Once I used DeKalb and another time Fulton in Alpharetta. They will give you papers to file with your ins co to see if they will pay - but I didn't follow through. And - the Hep shots are still expensive - but not like the private travel docs.

Just an FYI. I got the Typhoid vaccine and got Typhoid in Bangkok. The Doctor, which was wonderful, told me the vaccine they give in the states is an injection and is not nearly as affective as the pill which you can also get there.

Jason,

It is Fulton Co Bd. of Health, Alph 770-740-2408. Warning - Be patient waiting on them to ans the phone and in all respects. It IS a Govt agency! Also, the one in DeKalb was more efficient and more professional - but you have to use the one you live in.
