Ideas for 14 great days in India??!

Hello dear India-travellers

Can you give me advices on what places to see in India in 14 days? What are the most interesting places?
I'm studying tourism and have to create this trip of 14 days to India with emphasis on RELIGION but since I've never been there myself I thought some kind India-travellers could maybe help me.....
Since it's just an imaginary trip it doesn't have to be realistic in terms of distances!
I would be very grateful if someone answers my question
Thank you,
Greetings
Hófí in Iceland

A good place to start might be Varanasi (aka Benarez). this is where people bring their dead family members wrapped in Muslin to be burned on a funeral peer on the Ganges. All ashes go into the river. They might have 10-20 corpses going at once. this is near a town were Buddha was said to have given his first talk. I can't remember the name of the place. Dharamsala is also in India. This is where many Tibetans live in exile. also the home of the Dali Lama. so many others.

Hi,

India is my native country and I have been born and bought up in Delhi.

Your question can be covered in any of the four directions for religious digs. Go North you have Badrinath and Kedarnath which are situated so high up that the temples there close in winters as most of the journey to reach them has to be covered trekking/walking. Then move down a li'l on map, you have Vaishno Devi with thousands of devotees every single day thruout the year. Come down a li'l further and there flows our holy river Ganga in Haridwar which is richly endowed with temples and shrines, some of them being, the Mansa Devi Temple, Maya Devi Temple and Chandi Ghat Temple.
Varanasi (Kashi)has a long series of ghats along the River Ganga. Its array of temples include the Vishwanath Temple, Durga Temple, Annapurna Temple and Kal Bhairava Temple. Sarnath, where the Lord Budha, preached his first sermon.
Go South you have Kanyakumari, known as 'Land's End'-the only place in India where one can enjoy the view of beautiful sunsets and the moonrise simultaneously. You have famous Tirupathi, Mahabalipuram.
East ? You have Puri which has the renowned Jagannath temple from the 15th century AD. Go west you have Shirdi in Maharashtra.
The list is endless even for mentioning the religious centers all around India. To find better info I would suggest go thru some of the Travel sites on india like www.indiatravelinfo.com.

You'll find even your imaginary trip to this beautiful country fascinating.

Have fun !

Savie.

Apart from Hinduism and Buddhism, India has several sites from other religions.

Kochi in the southern state of Kerala has one of the oldest Jewish synagogues in the area; Goa on the southwest coast, has several Catholic churches - one where St Francis Xavier is embalmed; Chennai in the south has a church built on the spot where St Thomas died (I'm not too sure of this one, you may have to check it.) Delhi and Agra have mosques and tombs of sufi saints, where Muslims go to worship.
