I was in Dharamsala last june. We flew to Shimla, then hired a car to drive us to Mcleod Ganj/Dharamsala. McLeod Ganj is the upper part of Dharamsal. I recommend you stay here, as it is the area with the temples, and everything is walkable.
We stayed at the Asian Plaza hotel, right on the main plaza. Telephone is 91-1892-220655
It was recommended by one of the asst mgrs at Wildflower Hall in Shimla, who also found us a very safe driver at about 1/3 the cost of the Oberoi car for the about 5 or 6 hour drive. Nice hotel by Indian standards. We paid 7260 RS for 3 nights. I really liked Dharamsala, despite the crowds, because it is much more "Tibetan" so quite a change from other Indian towns.
My daughter spent several weeks living in Bangalore. She says the only thing she liked about it (she was 21 at the time) was the night clubs. Lots of them to cater to the call center crowds.

I have abandoned Bangalore idea after some feedback from this forum....so now I am thinking Delhi-Agra-Shimla-Dharamsala...thank you for your feedback...I am going to look into that hotel. You don't happen to have more info on the driver?
