Hue, Quy Nhon, or Da Nang for a month

Our family is traveling for a year and we would like to spend 3-4 weeks in November in Vietnam. We originally thought we'd go to Hoi An, but after reading about the influx of tourists, I don't think it's a place we'd enjoy staying. We don't love big, sprawling cities. We have four kids, ages 6-17, and want a place that's safe for the teenagers to walk around by themselves. We don't need a thriving nightlife, but access to great markets and cultural activities would be nice. We won't have a car, so good, cheap public transport or a place easily accessible by foot is necessary. Beaches are wonderful, but not a dealbreaker. My husband is working so good internet (but I think that's pretty much fine throughout the country?) We love family walks, trying new food, meeting new people, and learning about other cultures.

Any thoughts on which of these three cities are most suitable?

In my opinion, November is not a good time for those places; Bai Xep beach in Quy Nhon is less touristy.

November is the wettest time of year in central Vietnam with many areas prone to flooding. I would think again . At other times of the year, Hue would be my choice.

True before covid, NOT TRUE any longer. i was recently in Hoi An, very few tourists except Vietnamese on week-ends

Rainy season is September and October, NOT November

Sorry but you are wrong. Just about any weather statistics site will show November as the wettest month of the year in Hue and Hoi An along with October and September. It will be drier in centra highlands areas such as Dalat.
But hey, what’s a month either way it’s still wet!

You ar right. So, Quy Nonh might be better, more south and beautiful beaches north of the town (+ superb Cham towers in and out of town)

When is the best time to visit Vietnam? Would spring be better?

That depends upon when you would say "spring" is and where in Vietnam you wanted to visit.
