Hue & Hoi An
Hi everyone
I'm presently travelling unable to spend time in cafes researching accomodation in Hue & Hoi An. Would appreciate recommendations for low to mid range accomodation in these towns.

For Hue, http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en...title&resnum=1 shows you where Le Loi Street is in relation to the railway station [right at end] if travelling by train or if by bus Le Loi St. is on the south side of the river, main town area on north side.
There's quite a few cheaper basic hotels in Le Loi St. which seemed to have most accommodation, built for Vietnamese vacationers, No's 2 & 5 up the railway end and from memory I stayed at No. 5
You'll also find quite a few guesthouse style places, http://www.travelfish.org/accommodat...e/hue/all/3017 and reference to other places like the Citadel hotel, $10 - 15
In Hoi An [possibly changed a bit from when I was there with more options now] I stayed at the Hoi An Hotel which was fairly basic, http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en...sults&resnum=1 showing a heap more probably more expensive places now and could be from looks that even the Hoi An has been redeveloped, general pricing not showing Hoi An as having anywhere near as cheap options as Hue but Thanh Xuan shows a $26 special deal - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...el-Hoi_An.html

When you're there and if you want to see something a little different of what the locals do, ask down by the riverfront about where they build the large fishing boats - a trip across the river and they have these boat builder yards where they start from scratch with timber logs floated down the river, saw them up, mark out a centre line on the ground and away they go building fishing boats up to about 50' or so in length.

Great advice from bushranger. I would also take a look at http://www.vinhhungresort.com/vh1/location.php in Hoi An which is the only place right in the old town.
Also for budget type places we have always had good results from www.hostelworld.com

I was just in Hue and Hoi An.
While I can't recommend anything low, if you consider $65 a night "mid", I can highly recommend the Villa Hue. It is connected to the Hotel and Hospitality school in Hue so many of the people who work there are students. We had one of their best rooms for $65 a night, I think standard rooms may be less. The room was huge and the bathroom downright luxurious with glassed in walk-in shower. The free breakfast was really good too.

In Hue ('02) I stayed at Thanh Noi ( www.hotelvietnamonline.com/hue/thanhnoi/ is showing sgl/dbl $35/38). It was comfortable, popular with Intrepid groups, and handy for the Citadel, but the wrong side of the river for the main part of town.
In Hoi An ('02 and '04) I stayed in the Huy Hoang I - this is on the river by the Cam Nam bridge and close to the market. I had a "deluxe river view room", which was $25 in '04 but seems to be more like $30 now. The Vinh Hung also has a great location, but there are other, budget, places in town.
