Hotels in Tokyo?

My family and I are going to Tokyo in July and, although it is an arcane question, what is the best hotel in Tokyo? What is the most important factor when choosing a Tokyo hotel: location, room size, amenities? Any help would be great. Thanks

Bonjour Nick,

room size and amenities are personal choices, whereas location is an vital point that will condition what you can visit and the time you'll spend going from point A and B. The best places are located not too far from one of the major train or subway station (Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ueno, Asakusa) or close to the Yamanote loop line. Those allow you to go anywhere in the city and to enjoy daytrips without having to cross the whole city at rush hour.

You'll save a lot of money staying in smaller hotels and ryokans, and you'll often find yourself in more pleasant areas (Asakusa, Ueno, Yanaka ...), but of course you won't have the amenities and the space that you're used to.

Have a look at the Japanese Inn Group http://members.aol.com/jinngroup/
and Welcome Inns http://www.itcj.or.jp/index.html

for an idea of the places I'm talking about.

Aloha Nick-
I think the first question is what will you need? How big is your family? Will you be visiting anywhere in particular? Do you want a western style room or Japanese? what is your price range?

I usually go for location first, room style next, then price, then amenities.
Hi Lcuy, I'm in the middle of moving, didn't have as much time to play "goddess of Japan travel" as before ;-)

I've seen with pleasure that more people come to the board with very good advice. Maybe there'll be enough people to have a real pantheon soon
