Hotel New Otani Tokyo

Is there a big difference between getting a room in the Main building versus the Tower building?

Thanks,
Judy

The size seems to be significantly different, with the Tower rooms being much bigger. The hotel website is very informative, giving room and bed size for each room configuration, as well as photos and floor plans of many. http://www.newotani.co.jp/en/tokyo/s...ard/index.html

Hi KimJapan,

Yes, I saw that the room sizes are different, but I was actually wondering more if one building was older than the other. Are the rooms in one building old and in need of refurbishing while rooms in the other updated and modern? I think I remember reading a post about this difference between the two buildings, but it was from several years ago so I was looking for someone with current knowledge.

Thanks!
Judy

btw, from what I'm able to figure out, this hotel seems to be in a very good location in terms of access to various sights. What about a hotel in the Shinjuku area? If the price difference between the two is only about $25/night, which would you recommend?

I would send an e-mail to the hotel about the rooms. They will be able to tell you best.

We've stayed at the Hilton in Shinjuku and quite liked it.

For your time in early August the rates should be very good. I'd just pick the place you like the best. Transportation in Tokyo is very good.

Hi Judy,

I just stayed 4 days in the tower (king-size bed) on the top floor (43 or 44th)at the Hotel New Otani last week. I chose the tower due to lower prices and parts of the main building are under construction.

I applied for a membership card to get lower rates (and free breakfast which was very good) and was also able to take advantage of the NOC spring special (20000Yen/night without tax or service).
The room was lovely with a view on the Akasaka Palace grounds and the hotel garden and pool. No need to go up the Tokyo Government building for a view of the skyline since the view from the room was great.

The location was good for us since we are very familiar with using subways; only the Imperial Palace/Ginza was close enough to walk (due to our tight schedule).

The hotel is huge and there are long long hallways between checkin and elevators. The staff were charming and I would stay there again.

Hello Judy,

I stayed in the main building a few weeks ago and it was fine. We stayed here because of the Sakura and the bonus that the New Otani has an amazing garden. The hotel is a mini city and as moxie pointed out you can easly walk from one building to the next using the passages that are lined with shops - if you like reading try the bookshop as it had some interesting enlgish books on Japan.

moxie, did you apply for the membership card once you got to the hotel or when you made your reservation? I'm able to get a MUCH better rate on Expedia ($154.30/night - Standard Tower Queen or 2 Singles) than I find on the New Otani website. Do you know if I could get the breakfast included on the Expedia reservation if I get a membership card?

Also, is this in a very convenient location to be able to see many sights? I looked up the location on a map of Tokyo but, it's very hard to get a perspective of distance. Could you give me an idea just how far it is to walk to some of the different nearby sites (Ginza, Tsukiji, subway station, etc.) both in distance and estimated time? Will we be spending 20 mins just getting out of the hotel? I'm thinking MGM in Las Vegas which takes forever to walk from the back (parking) to the front (strip) because it's so huge.

Thanks,
Judy

I applied for membership online while making my reservation. Since the card is free, why not apply and ask your question about breakfast at that time (I don't know the answer) and also check to see if you are eligible for the frequent flyer bonus with the expedia reservation.

I don't think the hotel is in the best location to walk to sites but it was fine for us since we planned to cover alot of ground which would only be possible by subway anyway. The hotel is a peaceful oasis in the frenzy of Tokyo; I was very pleased with it and also with the view.

Try to get a Tokyo map from the JNTO in your city, print out a colour subway map to bring along from this site: http://www.tokyometro.jp/e/index.html
We used the "Tokyo travel guide" on this site to time our trips.

It takes about 10 minutes from a tower room to the Akasaka-Mitsuke stop. There is a shortcut though from the tower to the street: from the elevator go stright to the tower desk, make a left, then the next available right, there will be 2 elevators on your right. Take one to the ground floor, make a right and exit to the street, continuing right. The subway will be on your right.

Our walk to the Imperial Gardens was not timed and is a bit of a blur (it's about 2 km). The only trip we timed was from the main front desk (further from the street than the tower exit) to our train in Tokyo Station: it took 35 minutes total (we allowed an hour).
