Hotel in Yogyakarta, Java

We are wondering if it is better to stay in the center of town or out a ways, say at the Sheraton. Can anyone advise us....what about a hotel recommendation? <BR>Thanks for your time.

I would advise staying in the center of town. I stayed at the Melia Purosani Hotel when I was Yogyakarta and was very happy with it. It is a 4-star hotel right in the center of the city, and is very conveniently located to allow you to walk to the main shopping district, which is right around the corner. <BR> <BR>We passed by the Sheraton while on a tour. It was located off of a highway and did not appear to be within walking distance of anything. I'm sure its a nice hotel but I think you would enjoy being in the center of town much more.

melia is very convenient. it's passable, but the newer hotels like the hyatt while less convenient to town, are nicer. the best in the area is the amanjiwo which is part of the aman group. spectacular in all aspects, price as well. if it's out of your range try to go by for a meal when you're at borobudur. another tip, arrive at borobudur early. if you're staying in town leave your hotel at 5:30 a.m. the heat and crowds can overwhelm.

The Melia is more than "passable." It is a very nice hotel, and believe me, I am very picky about where I stay. It is far more convenient for walking around town than the other hotels mentioned. You'll get a much better flavor for the city if you stay in the town center rather than outside the city.

Bill: We stayed at the Sheraton last February. Very nice resort but out of everything. Besides that, we thought the rooms (huge) were somehow very humid and had a strange smell. But maybe it's due to the climate in Yogya. On the other hand, I had catched a very bad cold and was happy to stay in a nice hotel. I loved their lemon tea one could make in the room. Besides that I loved Yogya and Java in general and would return any time.
