Far East Youth Hostel (Yuandong Qingnian Lushe)
Tieshu Xie Jie 113, Xuan Wu District
This is near the Forbidden City and near the Qian Men Metro Station stop.
Heard this one is a good clean hostel, but, since I don't stay in hostels, can't give you any more information.

Taxis are very cheap in Beijing, while the metro is small and limited in the places it goes. I wouldn't limit my options because of public transport. There is a lovely hostel on Nanluoguxiang that seems extremely pleasant -- I think it's called the Backpacker's Hostel.

I stayed at Red Lantern House October 2007 and can recommend. Friendly staff, gorgeous communal area, rooms small, frugal but clean. Shared bathroom also exceptionally clean though there were problems with the quantity of hot water available!! Get up early was the moral there.
They have an 'annex' in a nearby street which I believe has rooms with en-suite, but I didn't stay there so can't report on whether it is up to the standard of the main hostel.
As for transport. A five minute walk to the main road and bus stop.
