Hong Kong: Macau or Lantau... or both?

Hi,
We are a family of four with a 6 and 7 year old, traveling to Hong Kong January 28 - Feb 1. I'm interested in seeing Lantau (not Disneyland) as well as Macau. Does anyone recommend seeing one vs. the other? Or is it possible (and feasible on a day trip) to take a boat to see one in the morning and the other in the afternoon?
Thanks!

As your time is limited suggest you skip Macau and focus on HK and Lantau. IMHO given the travelling time of 1 hour each way on the ferry plus additional time need to clear customers, waiting for the departure etc it's not worthwhile. Unless spending time in the casinos there's not much places I would like to visit. If you have the luxury of time perhaps as Macau is what HK was like years ago.

I'm from Hong Kong and although I realize you're not there for very long, I would actually recommend Macau over Lantau if you really don't want to stay inside Hong Kong itself. There's a LOT more stuff to do in Macau in terms of food to eat and beautiful places to see than Lantau, which is basically just an island with Disneyland and a big stone buddha on it. You do have to take an hour long boat ride to get to Macau though and it will take you another hour to get back so I would recommend going on a day trip early in the morning and getting back in the evening.

But personally, I would just stay in Hong Kong for those few days that you are there.

I missed this thread first time around.

First, it's not feasible to visit both on same day. Macau would take up a whole day, and there's no direct ferry between the two (not counting those connecting from/to flights at HKG).

Second, there's quite a bit to see on Lantau than just Disneyland. And the Big Buddha is not stone. There is the fishing village of Tai O, where one can also take a small boat to potentially see the pink dolphins, there are many smaller, quiet monasteries around Po Lin Monastery in Ngong Ping. And the cable car ride itself is quite worthwhile.

I love Macau, with the limited time, it's quite a bit of a rush, and the transportation cost is not insignificant. The even though the ferry itself is only an hour, there's immigration on either side that eats up time.
