Hong Kong Hotels
My sister and I are travelling to Hong Kong for the first time. Should we stay on HK island or in Kowloon or ? What about "inns" or "B&B's"? Should we book via the net (asia-hotels.com etc)? Being close to public transportation would be preferred, in a hotel with charm... Any help is appreciated! Also, recommendations for things to do in July for 3 full days in HK also appreciated.
-Connie-
Greetings -

This is one of those likes and dislikes questions. The island is where the business district, most of the expensive hotels, and lots of the big malls are. Generally, more expensive.

Kowloon (which is where we like to stay), has nice hotels, but most are not as expensive as the island. The shopping area is concentrated around Nathan Road. Also on Kowloon are the Ladies' Market and Temple Street Night Market. These are my favorite places although it depends on what you like. I don't like malls, to me they are boring. The markets are alot more exciting and interesting.

If it were me, 2 top picks would be Hyatt Regency or Holiday Inn Golden Mile. They are both right next to a metro stop. I've stayed at Hyatt Regency and it was nice. We got a double for $115 on Planetholiday.com
They have lots of deals on Asia-only hotels. Other hotels near a metro (but I haven't stayed at them) are Pearl Seaview, Majestic, and Grand Towers. These are at various spots along Nathan Road. We are considering one of these 3 for our next trip.

Also, I'm no expert but I don't think HK is the "B&B" type of place. Any other questions let me know. I can tell you more of what we did last Thanksgiving on our first trip there.
<BR

Hello Connie,
Check tthe site below for hotel guides. It was ran by Hong Kong's leading English newspaper. So it gives a honest overview of the hotels, but the "everything-is-nice" ones by the travel agencies.

http://hotels.scmp.com/

I agree with the first response Hyatt Regency in Kowloon is also one of my favourites for location. Kowloon hotel which is only a block down is also neat. Although their rooms a bit smaller, they have internet access in your htl rm. Over in HongKong Is. Causeway Bay area is not as expensive as the Wan Chai area htls. I would recommend Excelsior or Park Lane. To get cheap rates for these hotels, (I dont know where you live if there is a Chinatown) call one of the travel agencies in the Chinatown area and ask for their cheapest rates for these hotels that the others have recommended bec. they all have this net prices where you prepay for it here and they book and give you a voucher. It is usually about 1/3 lower than what you can get in the computer. The only thing that may turn you off from these agencies is there is no service and rude agents. Some of these hotel booked thru the Chinatown agencies even offer free bus transpo from the new HK airport to your htl. If transpo is not included, the fastest way is to take the Airport train link to either the Kowloon or HK is. station then they have connecting bus transfers to your htl. If they dont have a stop at your particular hotel, I took a taxi in Kowloon and it cost me about HK$50. As a first time tourist to HK inns are not recommended you may have a culture shock. I am not aware of B&B. This is the right time to go to HK bec hotels that were charging high prices (1200-1700) prior to July 1,97 are now charging between $500-700 a night. If you want a lower priced htl try the Prudential it has small rooms and it is on top of a subway stop. In HK it is classified as a C htl. The other above htls I've recommended is classified as a B htl in HK.
Dear Connie:
I strongly recommend you and your sister stay in Kowloon. It's alot of fun, especially at night. The MIRAMAR HOTEL is centrally located in the golden mile-Nathan Road ,very affordable, and its service is outstanding!
Northwest Airlines offers hotel/air packages that no one else can beat. Check that out! I also recommend to get some travel books from your local library to get familar with the areas. Also contact the HongKong Tourism Association and request a travel kit. (It contains maps, hotels, and a lot more information)If you prepare yourselves before your trip, you'll be more relaxed and will enjoy your vacation in HongKong.
