High speed rail from Hong Kong to Shanghai

I read some where, but can't refind, an article that said there was a new high speed rail being built between Hong Kong and Shanghai. I'm planning a trip to China and need to travel between these two cities, but don't want to spen 13+ hours on a train... I recall that this hypothetical new high speed rail is due to be completed late this year or early 2014 (my trip can wait until then). Does anyone know anything about this, or an alternative way to travel from HK to Shanghai besides flying and taking a long train ride? Even mismatching legs of other high speed rail routes would be an option, it's just so much to sort through!

The semi-highspeed line (250km/h) being built along the coast is supposed to be finished by end of this year, but not sure if there will be direct train from Shanghai all the way to Shenzhen. Also, it is not going to be fast. Currently it already takes 7 hours to get from Shanghai to Fuzhou, which is halfway.

Also being built and planned to open in June 2014 is the true high-speed line between Hangzhou and Changsha, which will connect to the existing line between Guangzhou and Beijing, and cut the current travel time. Again unclear whether there will be direct high-speed train between Shanghai and Guangzhou or Shenzhen using the new rail at that time.

And the high-speed rail connection into Hong Kong won't be open until 2017 the earliest.

Currently, you can already take the highspeed rail from Shenzhen-North to Wuhan in 5 hours. And connect to a semi-highspeed to Shanghai, taking 6. If you want to cut the time on the train further, you can get off that 2nd train in Nanjing-South, and switch to the fastest non-stop to Shanghai. That would cut an hour on the train, so, total time on train 10 hours not including connection time. Also not included time from Hong Kong to get to Shenzhen-North.

If you want convenience, either fly or take the overnight train. Unless you're a rail fan or you can't fly and need to get to Shanghai quickly.

Here's the schedule I was talking about:

G72 Shenzhen-North 7:56a Wuhan 12:47p
D3004/1 Wuhan 1:08p Shanghai-Hongqiao 7:11p

Or get off D3004 in Nanjing-South at 4:54p, then
G139 Nanjing-South 5:21p Shanghai-Hongqiao 6:42p

It'll be an earlier departure from Hong Kong, however.

I don't see what's wrong with the existing night train. You'll spend a good bit of the time asleep, provided you book soft sleeper.
