Help with Cell Phone in Thailand
Looking for the cell phone guru of Thailand. I will be in Bangkok mid November and would like to use my cell phone to make local calls as well as receive calls from and make calls to the U.S. ACT Mobile Company, Limited has a network operating at 1900MHz which is the common frequency in the US and of my phone. I've tried contacting ACT
(www.thaimobile.co.th/ or thaimobile.com) but both sites are in Thai and use Thai alphabet. I'm trying to determine if I can buy a Sim card in BKK which will work with my Nokia 6030. All help would be appreciated.

I just did a search and found out that the Nokia 6030 operate on either the GSM 900 or GSM 1800 network. Both these frequency or network have several service providers in Thailand so you will not have a problem finding a local sim card that will work with your phone.
The web site you've mentioned is for one such service provider - I Mobile. I have found that the best service is provided by the AIS group so you might want to buy a local sim card from them.

Thanks, Hanuman. Unfortunately the information you found about the nokia 6030 is incorrect. If you go to http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/6030/...feat:1,00.html
you will find the following: Service
GSM/GPRS 850/1900 MHz. ACT was the only provider in Thailand that I could find who offered 1900MHz. Thanks for your help.

Hhmmm... take a look at this link: http://europe.nokia.com/A4142050
Under operating frequency it state that the Nokia 6030 operate on the GSM 900 /1800 frequency.
I'll make some call to some local service provider tomorrow, night time now, and will let you know!

I just talk to Nokia Thailand and apparently the Nokia 6030 in the USA and the Nokia 6030 from the rest of the world have different specification - US = 950 & 1900 mhz and the rest of the world = 900 & 1800 mhz! According to Nokia Thailand even if Thaimobile support the 1900 mhz frequency(they cannot confirm this) your phone is most likely locked by Nokia USA so you will not be able to use it in Thailand - unless you have it unlock, cheaply done in Thailand!
I suggest you buy the cheapest Nokia in Thailand, about 1,700 baht for a new one and even cheaper for a used one, and buy a local sim card and this could be even cheaper than renting a mobile phone.

Thank you, Hanuman, for doing so much work. So we were both correct about the 6030 but didn't realize it was fitted differently in each country. Can you suggest a place where a used phone can be purchased? Thanks again. Jerry
