Help Required With Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia Itinerary

We are planning a trip in June and are struggling to keep the flying/transfer times down between our detinations. Our wish list departing from London is:

Siem Reap - 4 days
Krabi - 6 days
Kuala lumpur - 2 days
Cameron Highlands - 2 days
Langkawi - 7 days

Siem Reap and Krabi are both via Bangkok in addition the flight to KL is also via BKK. We have considered the option of travelling to Phuket from Krabi to get to KL or possibly scrapping either Krabi or Siem Reap. So my questions are:

Is it easy to travel from Krabi to Phuket by road and how long would it take considering we would have a flight to get from Phuket to KL?

If we were to scrap Krabi, is there somewhere within easy reach (car journey) of Bangkok that would provide stunning scenery and high quality hotels? This way we would have less flights to worry about.

I should add that KL, Cameron highlands and Langkawi are a must on the itinerary but I am really keen to see another beach area of Thailand with great scenery before we head off to Malaysia.

Please help.

The car journey from Krabi to Phuket airport is 2 1/2-3 hours. You could easily fly into Krabi and out of Phuket. Krabi is great.

FYI, There are now non-stop flights from Bangkok to Langkawi (and return) on Air Asia.

As you note, you are doing a lot of moving around. The only beach area I can think of immediately that is a drive from Bangkok is Hua Hin. While it has some fabulous hotels, it does not have the spectacular scenery of Krabi.

Most of your time is spent at beaches. If you are really interested in KL or the Cameron Highlands, you might take away a day or two fom the beach to augment your times there. Are you really in each of those places for two full days or does that include travel days? Even two full days is a minimal amount of time to spend in either place.

Kathie, thanks for the info. We've been to KL before so it was more of a pit stop before the Cameron Highlands.

We have decided to scrap Siem Reap and do it another time. So this gives us more time in Krabi and we would probably add a night to KL also.

We're not really sure how long to spend in the Cameron Highlands to be honest. We have one full day and 2 half days at present. Should we spend more time there? We love the look of it and would also play golf there if possible.

For some reason, the tour operator who gave us a quote could not book Air Asia flights. We may just book this ourselves though.

Instead of doing what seems to be your plan of Krabi-KL and then to Langkawi, another way would be Krabi-Langkawi-KL.
You can get a car and driver to drive you down from Krabi to Satun and then take the 1 hr 15 mins hour crossing from Satun to Langkawi.
You can then head to Cameron Highlands using boat from Langkawi to mainland and then by road Ipoh way. or fly Langkawi to Penang ( about 25 mins) and then across the bridge to the mainland and then to Cameron Highlands.

Road journey Krabi to Phuket is fine but you don't have to go to KL and then back up to Langkawi, as long as you don't mind a short boat trip from Satun to Langkawi.

Malaysia also does Phuket to KL in addition to Air Asia. You can book Air Asia online.

Do note that weatherwise June is not the best time of year for Krabi, you can get lucky but do note that it is not the 'best' time.

I have just noted that KL was not an important destination on the trip. My 'personal' opinion would be to keep Siem reap in the plan, you can then do Krabi and down to Langkawi.
From Langkawi you can take the ferry boat ( about 1 hr 15 ) across to Kuala Perlis and then take a taxi to Arau where you can pick up the rail line that goes south to Butterworth(Penang) and then through Ipoh, from Ipoh you can get local transport or taxi to Cameron Highlands.

This small map puts those places into perspective and also has the ferry details

If your long haul flights are based on a Bangkok return you can do all this thru Bangkok, you can fly back Air Asia Penang to Bangkok.

Langkawi is very very quiet.

Thanks JamesA. Can you give me an idea on the time it takes to travel from Krabi to Satun by road? If it's reasonable then we may just do that and finish up with the CH. Also, we're not great sea travellers (several stormy experiences in the Far East) so is the ferry to Langkawi fairly big?

I have to confess that we've been to Langkawi twice already and it's the tranquility which appeals to us. Well, that and the Datai!

We've usually travelled to the Far East in September so June will probably be the driest trip ever for us - at least I hope so! We can't go in the peak season as it doesn't fit in with our jobs.
