We got an amazing view of Mt Fuji from Lake Yamanaka. Having said that, it is slightly less convenient to get there (trains and quite a long bus ride) than Hakone.

Another thing, you won't get any views at all if the weather is cloudy/rainy. There's little you can do in Lake Kawaguchi or Lake Yamanaka in bad weather.

Lake Kawaguchi is much closer so you would have a "better" view of Mt Fuji here than anywhere in Hakone providing Fujisan is out that day.

You are better off trying for the morning view before the clouds set in.....that is if it is going to be a sunny day of course.

Good luck!
