Lordy, this is dreadful. It's just getting worse and worse as we watch. Flames seen coming out of the Taj now. Awful.

the fire/smoke is from the old oberoi (now trident hotel) it is not from the Taj.

I posted about this in the Lounge, also. What a terrible disaster. If you are in that area, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am traveling to Rajastan, Varnassi Delhi over Xmas, but not staying at 5 star hotels. Of course like an idiot I have no trip cancellation insurance, although I don't think fear of being blown up is a covered expense!

I tend to be a fearless travel and the thought of losing $8,000 plus airfare does not appeal to me, but would you go India at this time, especially with a US passport? I will be escorted by a private guide most of the time, but that does not mean he will know exactly when the bombs will go off.

What does everyone think??

Kim,
I don't know if it's helpful but we'll be going anyway, arriving December 9th for a couple of weeks. I must say I'm glad I'm not staying at the Imperial or the Oberoi properties.

My goodness, this is very very sad. We are scheduled to leave on December 19 for our tour of Rajasthan, we are staying at Taj Hari in Jodphur, Udaivillas and Amarvillas (1 night only each, all we can afford).

I assume we will continue our travel, have not given it much thought yet.

Kimwhits, I think I'd wait and see how this goes before making any firm decisions. In my brain I think I wouldn't let terrorists stop me from living my life, wouldn't give them the satisfaction, but in my heart there would be a lot of trepidation.
Wait and see. Also, some airlines could refuse to fly into a situation like that, if it was continuing. It might not even be your decision in the long run.

Oh, it relates to some heated vulgar correspondance that occurred before, Challiman. The moderators cut it all out. Girlspy has been naughty.

Thanks, I had no idea.

Looks like some group, Deccan Mujahadeen, is claiming responsibility.

Sad times.

Oh yes, it's shocking. I'm watching The Taj now. That fantastic hotel in flames. I've been looking at my pictures from when I stayed there in August. I think that wonderful central lobby is badly wounded.

My heart just really really breaks to hear this. We were just in India this past September and October. I will never forget what one waiter said to us when we asked about terrorism.
He said "those people have no soul, no heart, no mother, no father no children"
I feel so terrible for the families and victims and also for the poor nice people of India who really rely on tourist support to sustain their families. This is just horrible!

I honestly cannot comprehend how people could do such things! It's absolutely tragic and my heart goes out to anyone personally affected.

A coworker at my new job was telling me just this morning that he was from Mumbai. I can't stop thinking of this guy now. I really hope his family is ok...

Just watched it too. Stayed there earlier this year, think our room was on the side where the flames are leaping from.

Yes, it is awful. We are scheduled to fly into Mumbai in 2 weeks. Our daughter-in-law has been trying to communicate with her family in Kolkata and Mumbai. She wants us to change our plans. We will wait for a while to make any decisions, but it is very sad and upsetting, especially for everyone there.

I just heard about this now. It's so terrible. Right now it's not known if any UK or US citizens are hurt/killed.

A couple of Aussies are certainly on the hurt list at the moment. Reports are the terrorists are asking for holders of UK/US passports - not good at all. I can't imagine that with the targeted places there won't be a number of tourists hurt or killed as well as lots of locals.

Hopefully they will get it under control soon. As well as all the human suffering its really sad to see the damage to the lovely buildings.
