My 25 year old daughter and her fiance are on their way to Guilin, hoping to get there before the holiday beginning Oct. 1st. They are on a budget and I wondered if any travelers have recommendations for places to stay there. They plan to stay for the week as they have heard everyone will be traveling during that time. Any places where Americans might hang out? They have not been successful in finding folks who speak English and need a familiarity fix. Thanks for your help. Grantier

Yangshuo, just down the river from Guilin, is supposed to be overflowing with cheap accomodation and backpackers, most of whom will speak English. Tell them to pick up a copy of the Lonely Planet guide (or Rough Guide).
