Guides in Kolkata and Kathmandu?

My husband and I will be in Kolkata and Kathmandu in October and would like to hire a guide in each city for an afternoon or day-long tour. I'm not sure what the options are, but I'd be interested in seeing Victorian architecture in Kolkata, for example. Neither of us are interested in doing a slum tour. Does anyone have any recommendations? Many thanks.

The only places in the Kathmandu Valley where I'd use a guide is at the Durbar Squares in the three cities and at Pashupatinath. At each of these places, there are licensed guides you can hire inexpensively on the spot. All of the guides I've hired at these places have been very good. Other than that, you'll hire taxis or even a car and driver for a day. Personally, I wouldn't hire a guide "for Kathmandu."

In Kolkata, were plan to use Calcutta Walks. Google them. Choose the walks that are of the most interest to you. Yes, there is one on Victorian Architecture.

Thanks so much, justshootme and Kathie. I will look into Calcutta Walks and perhaps contact Janga.

Another vote for Calcuttawalks. The folks who helped plan my last two wonderful trips to India use them--which for me, is all the recommendation I need!

Can't wait to read more about your experiences upon return from Calcutta, Kathie and Tatie--we're planning for it Dec 2011.
