Guide / driver in Langkawi
Hi there,
we will be visiting Langkawi as one of the ports on our cruise in January. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on approximate cost of a half day hire of a driver to give a tourof the sights etc. I have been before and know where I would like to go. I am not sure where the port is.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Donna

Donna, the 'port' where the cruise liners dock is not in Kuah ( unless it has changed recently ), driving back from Kuah to Centai one evening I got 'lost' and landed up on a coast road between Kuah and Centai as oppsoed to the normal road that tends to go more through the 'middle, anyway from the road I saw a dock/port so I pressume the ship will dock there.
I hope someone can give you a tip but you might want to try a local car rental company + a driver, than would mean that as opposed to a taxi or perhaps not 'newish' car you will get a nice decent Car with a reliable driver, and no doubt you can pay by Credit Card too.
I think the company I used was 'Mayflower' who are Malaysian and quite cheap, I will try and dig out details, but maybe that is the best way to have a nice small car with a reliable driver for the day.
Ok I took a couple of minutes

I am not saying that is cheapest but unless someone comes up with a known driver/guide at least you can get it booked and organised in advance.

JamesA, you seem very knowledgeable and very responsive...
Would you know a good cost effective local car rental company if I want to take the car from Penang airport and drop it off in KL, 12 days later? This will be in March 2004.

It's just that I have used Mayflower in both Langkawi and Penang, they tend to be cheap and they are well known. I would just try those emails I gave Donna, their website is very (very!) slow. They are at Penang Airport in arrivals area. Just get any Proton Wira, they are the No.1 most popular car, I would go for a 1.5 or the Automatic, the benefit of a Proton is that if you are traveling for 12 days any local garage can fix as they are the No.1 car you will see everywhere in Malaysia, they do some small 4 door Proton Rec Vehicles too which are nice for travelling.

Dear James,
thanks for your quick reply. I will look up the web site and email Mayflower to see what they can do.It sounds like the port is a fair distance from the town of Kuah and surrounds. Once again, thank you for your help
