The USD is getting a lot stronger in Vietnam:

Good info, thanks. Just trying to decide where to go on a last minute air fare sale through today, and Vietnam is on the short list.

Clifton, VN is a great travel destination, just not sure what the weather is like that time of year. It is probably OK up north.

That's what I thought I was seeing on wunderground.com, looking at this months calendar of daily temps and rain in April and May. Saigon hot - but maybe not as bad as Bangkok, but Hanoi hovering in the 70's-80's. Which sounds ok. Not bad for the heat and humidity haters in the family. And I'm really more drawn to the north and central parts of the country anyway.

Clifton - don't know who reported Hanoi hovering in the 70's-80's in May. I was there in May and can attest to the fact that it was hotter than H-ll. Living in Florida, we are used to the heat, but it was unbearably hot and humid reaching over 100 degrees. We had to take daily naps and get out of the heat between 1:00-5:00. We were there 3 weeks. Admittedly, we only had rain twice on our entire trip.

April and May. There is no chance of storms so it's good.

Thanks for the extra info. As it turned out, family crisis kept us from jumping on the tix, but we'll get another chance I'm sure.

dgunbug, I'd just gotten that idea of the average from the wunderground's historical tracking. That was what they were showing as the coolest period in the past. I know that can fluctuate a lot though and you never know when you'll get a hot or cold snap or way more rain than usual.

Clifton... go in late March. We'll be there in Hanoi, and I'd love to buy you a drink and trade wacky travel tales.

That'd be a blast! I know we'd enjoy the heck out of that.

No idea if we'd ever pull that off though. It'd have to be a fluke. Depends on the fares - can you believe we had to let a ~$300 r/t (which started with Apr travel) slip through our fingers? We're a bit downsized currently.

And that the squirt is off to her first month of kindergarten just then.

So it's a great idea, but more than a bit of a trick to pull off.
