Getting around Hong Kong

We will be staying in Kowloon, but want to travel over to Hong Kong Island to sightsee. It looks like we can take the subway over and walk a short distance to the tram for Victoria Peak. How do we get between there and Repulse Bay, Stanley Market, and the floating restaurants in Aberdeen? It looks like there are buses, but can someone tell me for sure? Thanks

Take the Star Ferry over from Kowloon to the island. From there, you can get a bus to Stanley. I'm not sure which one, maybe number 6. We were on a tour, so we didn't really have to get around that much on our own. I think Stanley is fairly close to the Aberdeen Harbor, so once you are in the area, a taxi would probably not be expensive. Before we flew over, I read that the bus is the way to go to see everything on your way (Aberdeen is on the opposite side of the island from the ferry terminal - peak tram is somewhere in the middle). I think it takes about 45 minutes to get to Aberdeen on the bus. Have a great time! I loved HK and can't wait to go back.

You can take the metro and buses everywhere in HK. We found more taxi drivers had a better grasp of English then the bus drivers. Taxis are very inexpensive there but of course public transportation can't be beat. Get your hotel to print up its name and adress in Chinese . That way you can show it to the taxi driver if you are unsure of being able to get your destination across if you feel like going home by taxi. Works like a charm.

Just returned from HK. The city must have one of the best transportation systems in the world! We didn't use the public buses and trams much, but used a lot of taxis, the subway and the classic old ferries (first class, about 30 cents US!) <BR> <BR>If you're on a strict budget, by all means try to figure out the local buses (the HK Tourist Association or your hotel can probably get you a map). But taxis are plentiful, cheap, and always air conditioned. We had no trouble using them (although the advice about having your destination in Chinese if possible is a good one). <BR> <BR>Good luck!

Here is where you can find some info on the bus routes from Star Ferry (Central, HK Island) to Stanley: <BR> <BR>http://www.citybus.com.hk/english/tripper.htm (it also tells you what bus to get to Aberdeen from Stanley, etc) <BR> <BR>They also have a bus route finder that is very useful. It seems that #6,6A,6X, and 260 all serve Stanley from Central, Admiralty, and Wan Chai areas. <BR> <BR>Enjoy your stay! <BR>Tex <BR>www.12hk.com - unofficial guide on Hongkong

I stayed at the Hong Kong Hotel - 3 canton Road - Kowloon..Directly across the street is the bus stop...I went twice to Stanley Beach. The bus ride itself is terrific as the route wends it way along the cliffs to Deepwater Bay, Repulse Bay and Stanley. It also stops in Aberdeen. Your hotel concierge will be able to tell which bus it is. <BR> <BR>You can get a bus in HK as well to Stanley...but now you have spent subway fare and then bus fare. Best to take the bus is from Kowloon side...if you are already there... <BR> <BR>As far as getting to HK from Kowloon - it is very simple - if you can walk to the Star Ferry - then you will have the "BEST" 8 minute ride for the "LEAST" amount of money. It is unsurpassed. <BR> <BR>The MTR is fine too, but you see nothing. <BR> <BR>One more thing - most people believe the Jumbo Boat Restaurants in Aberdeen are overrated. Serving a thousand meals at once... <BR> <BR>Have lunch or dinner in Stanley. I can personally recommend Lucy's in Stanley. <BR> <BR>Michael <BR>PS: Making my 4th visit to HK in November
