Five Star HongKong Hotels

We are going to be in HK in mid-July 2001 and are deciding between the Mandarin Hotel, the Regent Hotel and The Peninsula. Which one would you recommend, taking into consideration hotel location, views, amenities and proximity to attractions/shopping. Thanks in advance.

We stayed at the Peninsula Hotel in October, can't beat it for elegance, location and shopping. The "PEN" is on Nathan Road, close to the Star Ferry, and has a beautiful High Tea in the afternoon with a live orchestra--just wonderful, in fact, one of the highlights of our trip! Enjoy Hong Kong whatever your decision!

You don't have to stay at the Peninsula to have High Tea there, do you? We are staying at JW Marriott this Christmas, and I'm planning to dropy in at the Peninsula for this very thing.

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental last year and could not have been more pleased. Our room was very comfortable and had a great view of the harbor. I'd stay there again. A lot of people recommend staying in Kowloon so you can see the island, but I liked being on the island. The Mandarin is just across the street from the Star Ferry dock, so it's very easy to get to Kowloon. Enjoy.

Kathy: High Tea at the Pen (the lobby) is accessible to everybody. It's one of the things I always do, when in HK.
Also do not miss the lobby of the Regent's to see the sun go down.
Breathtaking! Enjoy.

Just returned from trip to s-e Asia, including 3 days in Hong Kong. While in H.K. stayed at the Harbour Plaza in Kowloon. The Chairman of China was there at the same time as us, so no question about the quality. The harbour view from our room was breathtaking. The roof top swimming pool can't be beat! It's a great city, Enjoy!

I would recommend the Peninsula (although it is the most expensive choice).
WHY:
1. The Regent is since June 1st under new Management and part of the Intercontinental Chain (!!) - and now called Hotel Inter-Continental Hong Kong. Quality and Service will definately change under that new Management.
2. Mandarin Oriental has pretty small romms (incl. tiny bathrooms, no separate shower stall) and the balconies are not usable because next to star ferry is a huge construction area for new office buildings.
3. The Peninsula has by far the best rooms (in size and equipment) the best health club/pool and the highest service.

An alternative would be Island Shangri-la, my favourite for HK Island
I am from HK. Peninsula Hotel has the best location and the most elegrant. Regent Hotel is the newest(nice harbor view). The location is not bad. It is across the street from Nathan Road. Mandarin Hotel has the best reputation for service, but I founded it out of style.

As for High tea at the Peninsula, BEWARE OF DRESS CODE. Shorts are not allowed.

Hello, I have just returned from 3 weeks in China, HK and BKK. We stayed at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel, in HK. It was elegant. Enjoyed it very much and it was not far to the Pennisula to go to high tea. It is a must while there no matter where you stay. It was an elegant afternoon. I don't know about the other hotels you mentioned but the Pennisula seems qutie nice although I was very satisfied with the one we stayed in.

peninsula is the most elegant. opulent rooms and classic service. very pricey.
regent was recently taken over by intercontinental. they say they won't change it, but who knows? pool and lobby lounge are the best in hong kong. location between pen and intercon about the same.
if you would like to stay on the hong kong side (personally i think this is a better choice. more tradition, but maybe less shopping.) then you should look into the ritz carlton. it's a boutique hotel with wonderful views, lovely rooms, impecable service. right next to the star ferry so kowloon is readily accessible.
mandarin has a great reputation but i find it irritatingly stuffy.

I stayed at the Peninsula last year for several days and would highly recommend it. You will be across the Harbor in Kowloon, but the ferry is a 2 minute walk. This will provide the best view. (Kind of like staying in Brooklyn but looking at Manhattan.)
If you are on the Hong Kong Island side, the view isn't as spectacular, but it may be more convienient.
If you are at the Peninsula, MAKE SURE you get a Harbor view room. Otherwise, it may not be worth the cost.
The restaurant on the top floor is worth a visit, even if you stay elsewhere.
One other note, you may want to treat yourself to a few custom made shirts. There is an Ascot Chang shirtmaker in the hotel. (If you get measured when you first arrive, you can take them with you in a couple of days. If you ship them home, the duty and taxes can add significant cost.)
