You'll have a wonderful time in Beijing. I think you can wear whatever you like and it'll be fine. I found the best bargains in the little shops just south of Tiananmen Square. Most things are 5 or 10 yuan, and we found lots of fun trinkets and souvenirs there. I also bought several of those little silk purses for gifts, and they were a real hit. Best prices for those were right on the streets, with vendors selling them in packets of 15 or so. I wish I had bought more than I did. They measure about 5x7 inches, they are flat, and you can squeeze a whole stack into your suitcase with no trouble! Also, we stayed at the Marco Polo Hotel. It's a little west of the main tourist sights, about a 15-20 minute walk to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, but we liked it very much. Have a great trip!

Shorts and sneakers are fine.
Gifts I've brought back are embroidered tote bags, chopstick sets, home decor stuff like embroidered throw pillow covers, table runners, placemats, etc, small teapots and vases, calligraphy brushes, small framed drawings/paintings and musical instruments. I've also purchased jade but stick with the inexpensive stuff.
If someone specifically asks me, I'll bring back knockoff items.

LuckyGirl, I think you should buy your books in Shanghai, at the Foreign Language Bookstore at 390 Fuzhou Lu. Easy to find - Fuzhou is a major road parallel to and south of Nanjing Lu. The selection isn't huge and the books aren't all that cheap, but it should do.
I've seldom been anywhere that felt as safe as Beijing after dark. There are some threads on this forum (if you use the search box) that will point you towards some good restaurants in Beijing. Personally, I hate eating in hotels, but if you'll be on your own it might be more trouble than it's worth to do anything else. See how you feel on the day (or night).
