Hi-

I'm going to Thailand next month and of course I'll be taking my digital camera. However, we'll be doing some snorkeling, kayaking and we'll be in Bangkok during Songkran where there will be a lot of water throwing. Of course, I don't want my digital to get ruined by someone tossing a bucket of canal water on it but I do want to be able to take some photos while we're there.

I've used various underwater cameras in the past, but my experience with them has been hit and miss. The pictures out of the water haven't been especially good. The underwater photos are only good if there's lots of sun of course.

So, can anyone recommend a particular brand that good with pictures both in and out of the water?

Thanks!

Most of the underwater "disposal" cameras have very high speed films(400 ASA and more) in them so that they can take pictures in the low light conditions like under the water. When you use them above water, especially during daylight, especially in Thailand during Song Kran(bright sunshine usually), the pictures will most likely be over exposed. These cameras don't really have good lens in them either so taking a picture of something not within spitting distant will not really yield any good photograph.

I would try and find a disposable underwater camera with a film speed of not more than 200 ASA(not sure if they make them with that film speed). You can also try and find a water proof housing for your digital camera as that would be the best solution.

I am thinking about getting the waterproof housing at the following website(currently out of stock as I post this):

Hanuman- I would love to get the "official" waterproof housing made specifically for my camera but it's over $150 (I have a Nikon 7900). That's out of my range unfortunately.

Richard-that's an interesting product you linked. It kind of looks like you'd be taking pictures through a plastic bag. I wonder how it works (ie-quality of photo through the case)?

I am also in the market for a good waterproof digital camera but I don't want to spend $$$ for a "real" waterproof cover for my digital camera.
That being said, I would not try/trust the product that Richard mentioned.
We kayak quite often and have tried several of these kind of drybags but they have not worked for protecting cameras, cell phones etc.

Kristina - the website shows an alleged picture taken throught the case, which looks clear.

cruisinred - If I get this product, I am not going to try using it with my good camera. I have an old 2 megapixel digital camera that I don't use any more that I will use with the case. If the case leaks, I'll return it and just throw away the old camera.

If I do get it, I will post my opinion of it here. It will be a while though, as our trip is not until the end of May.
