bacooking, I chose Inle Lake Resort based on location. It is closer to the airport and other attractions outside Inle Lake. You do not need to take a boat to get there. The Inle Princess has received great reviews and you can see the sun set from there but for us it was not worth the extra travel time. Kids would be equally fine at either, I think. As for treks, we've never done one but I'd opt for Myanmar as it is much less developed than northern Thailand and could be a more unique experience for you and your family.

Just read your posts for the first time. I completely understand having to put things aside for awhile. I had to do the same thing over the holidays. Anyway, we will be doing a similar trip in March with our kids but will do Angkor War instead of Mynamar. Just wanted to mention that we used Eddie for Inter-Thailand flights, and he was extremely helpful, and frankly I didn't see any difference in the amount I had to pay then booking directly. I think it is helpful to have a connection to someone who is there.
He will not actually book you flights on the low cost airlines, such as Air Asia but can still provide info., etc.
